How To style a brooch

Reimagining an Icon of Elegance for the Modern Wardrobe
Brooches have always fascinated me. They’re one of those timeless accessories that never truly leave they simply evolve with us. I’ve always seen brooches not as mere embellishments, but as conversation starters tiny sculptures that carry personality, nostalgia, and often, a story worth telling.
I grew up watching my mother and grandmother wear brooches as quiet statements of sophistication. But over time, I began to realize they could be so much more than tradition they could be bold, playful, and entirely personal.
In my own designs and styling work, I love using brooches to disrupt expectation to place them somewhere unexpected, or pair them with textures that make them feel contemporary again. So here’s how I like to approach styling them, whether you’re wearing one of my pieces or something from your own collection.
1. Let the Brooch Tell Its Story
Every brooch has a tone vintage, modern, romantic, abstract. The first step is listening to what it says. A delicate pearl or floral motif whispers elegance, while geometric or metallic forms command attention. I often build an outfit around that mood letting the brooch lead the conversation rather than just decorate it.
2. Think Beyond the Lapel
Traditionally, brooches live on jackets and blazers, but I rarely stop there. Try pinning one at the collarbone on a silk blouse, at the waistline of a dress, or even on the cuff of a sleeve. Brooches on hats, scarves, and handbags create visual rhythm turning everyday items into wearable art.
One of my favorite placements is off-center on a turtleneck or knit, where it breaks symmetry in the most elegant way.
3. Combine Old with New
Mixing eras adds texture and intrigue. Pair a vintage cameo with a crisp, modern blazer, or combine a contemporary abstract brooch with a vintage scarf. The tension between old and new brings character it’s where true style lives.
4. Use Brooches as Jewelry Alternatives
A brooch can replace a pendant or even act as a focal point on a choker or chain. I often attach one to a ribbon or velvet band and wear it as a necklace for a theatrical, romantic look. On evening wear, pinning a brooch at the base of an open back or along a draped shoulder adds understated drama.
5. Layer and Cluster for Impact
Why stop at one? Some of my favorite fashion moments come from layering multiple brooches together, mixing metals, stones, and motifs. When clustered intentionally, they form constellations of expression each piece amplifying the next.
I like to think of it as storytelling through texture a curated chaos that feels both deliberate and free.
6. Bring It Into the Everyday
Most people reserve brooches for formal occasions, but I love bringing them into the casual. On a denim jacket, a trench coat, or even a plain tee, a brooch becomes an act of rebellion elevating the ordinary with a flash of creativity.
The secret isn’t in perfection. It’s in attitude. Wear your brooch like you mean it.
Why Brooches Still Matter
In an age of minimalism and fast fashion, the brooch remains defiantly expressive. It’s one of the few accessories that can carry memory, craftsmanship, and art in one small form. Whether made from fabric, metal, or mixed media, a brooch isn’t just an accessory it’s a signature.
And for me, that’s what wearable art is all about turning personal expression into something you can actually wear.
So the next time you see a brooch, don’t ask, “Where should I wear it?”
Ask, “What story do I want it to tell?”
